Disable buttons after submission

Hello,

Could someone kindly show me how to either disable the ‘Proceed to checkout’ and ‘Place order’ buttons or change their labels once clicked? Currently Ajax loader image is appearing on the top of the page so it’s not clear to customers if their click has worked or not so they tend to click it again. I looked everywhere without much luck.
